I’ve finished writing the first chapter of my debut book, The Healthcare Rebellion (2027). I’m relieved to have crossed this initial writing threshold as a new author and I’m starting to naturally find my rhythm in the process.
Chapter one documents my invasive lobular breast cancer diagnosis in January 2023, the first half of active treatment, the identification of the disease more than 80 years ago, and the shocking realisation that its histology presents multiple challenges.
Chapter two will delve deeper into the difficulties surrounding the disease due to a significant lack of research and funding, and the ongoing effect this has on women diagnosed. It will examine failures pertaining to NICE Guidelines and will introduce the work of the Lobular Moon Shot Project campaign, along with the voices of women who are fearful of metastases or recurrence, who often feel dismissed by a healthcare system that’s meant to protect them.
These first two chapters form the gateway into the wider narrative of the book examining centuries of misogynistic systems that have contributed to the neglect of women’s health in the UK.
If you would like to share your lobular experience please contact me, I would be honoured to tell your story. If preferable, names can be changed to protect identities and no information about specific healthcare professionals, hospitals or NHS Trusts will be included.
